Hallelujah – Leonard Cohen Cover (The Rye Room Sessions)- English blog post
Leonard Cohen cover

The Rye Room Sessions
I’ve always loved Leonard Cohen. I love how he delivers his lyrics. It’s unique. He actually also wrote a few songs in French and from what I know lives in Montreal. He knows how to use words so well. Tell great stories. “Hallelujah” is such an iconic song. Ironically it was not a hit when it was released in the mid 1980s. Jeff Buckley’s version of that same song became a hit 20 years later. People then rediscovered the original after that. Apparently Leonard Cohen wrote 80 verses before pinning down the ones he wanted on the recording. I can relate to that struggle, to some extent…
I’ve been touring in the US for almost 10 years now. Often, I get asked to play some cover songs. When my friend, producer, and sound engineer, Matt Greco (who helped me with my album “Idaho“) opened his brand new studio “The Rye Room”, he asked me if I wanted to be the first one to do his “Rye Room Sessions” videos. I thought it could be a good opportunity to record some of those covers and share them with you guys. It made sens for me to put “Hallelujah” on this album. I also recorded songs from Green Day and Depeche Mode and The Offspring

Also your contribution helps me offset the cost of production (paying for the studio, for the sound engineer, the videographer and for licensing rights), but it also tells me that what I’m doing is worth the effort and supports my entire creative process. It enables me to continue creating more music to share with you. Since I’m an independent “Do It Yourself” musician, without a record deal, it really means a lot and really counts and has an impact.

LYRICS TO THE SONG:
Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Chorus: Hallelujah x 4
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
