“Self Esteem”
The Offspring cover by Eric John Kaiser
The Rye Room Sessions

The Offspring’s album “Smash” is another one of my favorite 90’s album. Behind the heavy guitars hides actually well crafted pop songs. Like I did for Green Day’s “Basket Case“, I thought it would be fun to deconstruct the song “Self Esteem“.  The lyrics are also fun to sing. Nice and ironic.  Listen below to see how it turned out.

I’ve been touring in the US for almost 10 years now. Often, I get asked to play some cover songs. When my friend, producer, and sound engineer, Matt Greco (who helped me with my album “Idaho“) opened his brand new studio “The Rye Room”, he asked me if I wanted to be the first one to do his “Rye Room Sessions” videos. I thought it could be a good opportunity to record some of those covers and share them with you guys. I also recorded songs from Leonard Cohen, Green Day and Depeche Mode.

Your contribution helps me offset the cost of production (paying for the studio, for the sound engineer, the videographer and for licensing rights), but it also tells me that what I’m doing is worth the effort and supports my entire creative process. It enables me to continue creating more music to share with you. Since I’m an independent “Do It Yourself ” musician, without a record deal, it really means a lot and really counts and has an impact.

LYRICS TO THE SONG :

I wrote her off for the tenth time today
And practiced all the things I would say
But she came over, I lost my nerve
I took her back and made her dessert

Now I know I’m being used
That’s okay, man, ’cause I like the abuse
I know she’s playing with me
That’s okay ’cause I got no self esteem

We make plans to go out at night
I wait ’til 2 then I turn out the light
This rejection’s got me so low
If she keeps it up I just might tell her so

When she’s saying that she wants only me
Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends
When she’s saying that I’m like a disease
Then I wonder how much more I can spend
Well, I guess I should stick up for myself
But I really think it’s better this way
The more you suffer
The more it shows you really care
Right? Yeah, yeah, yeah

Now I’ll relate this little bit
That happens more than I’d like to admit
Late at night she knocks on my door
She’s drunk again and looking to score

Now I know I should say “No”
But that’s kind of hard when she’s ready to go
I may be dumb but I’m not a dweeb
I’m just a sucker with no self esteem

When she’s saying that she wants only me
Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends
When she’s saying that I’m like a disease
Then I wonder how much more I can spend
Well, I guess I should stick up for myself
But I really think it’s better this way
The more you suffer
The more it shows you really care
Right? Yeah, yeah, yeah

Merci!
